Ravensara (Ravensara aromatica) essential oil is distilled from the leaves of an endemic species of the Laureaceae family that is native to and grows wild in Madagascar. Also a member of the Laureaceae family, Ravintsara(Cinnamomum camphora or “Camphor Tree”) is native to China, Japan and Taiwan and, despite the similar spelling, is a completely different oil with different aromatherapeutic properties.
The secret to Ravensara essential oil’s efficacy for the respiratory system and unusual aroma lies in a small but significant percentage of potentially problematic methyl chavicol that is “cloaked” in an abundance of gentle terpenes, sesquiterpenes, and alcohols. One could say Ravensara is a blend in itself that is beneficial for the sinuses and respiratory system when inhaled.
