As a dried herb, White Sage is traditionally used in Native American culture for ceremonial cleansing; in a similar fashion, essential oil of Salvia officinalis can be diffused to cleanse room environments, or a drop rubbed on the hands to disinfect and clear energy between clients.
Among its many properties, Sage essential oil is antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, diuretic, and analgesic. Its preferred mode of use is topical, which makes it an excellent addition in skincare due to its regenerative qualities, and because of its ability to dissolve lipids (fats), it is used against cellulite. Sage essential oil is indicated for bronchial conditions and coughs, and is used for mouth and throat infections (as a gargle), to heal wounds, and clear headaches.5Like other essences containing ketones, it is recommended for slow-healing wounds and to diminish old, unsightly scars.
Salvia officinalis has a high thujone content (40-70%), and because of this, it is necessary to use this oil only with appropriate caution; thujone can be highly hepato-toxic when incorrectly used, yet when used judiciously the essential oil of sage promotes bile production. Thujone mimics estrogen and is used to assist with painful or missed menses and menopausal symptoms, and for this reason it is not recommended during pregnancy.
